With 130 deaths each year in Maidstone Stuart Jeffery, the Green Party's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Maidstone and the Weald, has welcomed the High Court ruling against government attempts to delay publication of its plans to tackle air pollution. The government had tried to use the general election to postpone publication for six weeks. Stuart has been campaiging for measures to tackle air pollution, predominantly from traffic, that causes around 130 deaths each year in the Borough.
Stuart Jeffery, Green Party Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Maidstone and the Weald: "I was delighted to hear that government's outrageous attempts to delay their plans to tackle one a the leading but preventable causes of death and morbidity in the country have failed. Attempting to use the general election as a smokescreen adds insult to injury so I am thankful that the courts have ruled against the government.
"Air pollution, predominantly from traffic, is responsible for around 130 deaths in Maidstone each year so how this can be allowed to continue is utterly beyond me. The time for action is now, Maidstone's air pollution is as bad as central London as our local monitoring have shown.
"The actions taken by Client Earth to bring this legal case are really welcome. The government had requested a 6 week delay a period during which 15 people in Maidstone would die as a result of air pollution."
