Maidstone Greens have welcomed the, albeit reluctant, agreement by Maidstone Borough Council that they will consider our request to declare a climate emergency. Stuart Jeffery of Maidstone Green Party asked the Council whether it would consider making the declaration and after initially refusing to do so the Lib Dem led council relented and agreed to consider it. The Greens were pleased to hear the Labour group’s support for a declaration.

Stuart Jeffery, Maidstone Green Party: "It is heartening that Maidstone Borough Council has agreed to consider declaring a climate emergency, in response to our request at tonight’s Council meeting but it is a real shame that they agreed grudgingly.

"Given the dire warnings from the UN’s IPCC, and with numerous Councils already having declared a climate emergency, it is obviously crucial that this is now taken forward with ambitious proposals and we will be working to ensure that happens.

“The climate breakdown has already started as this week’s extreme weather events have shown. The best time to act was 30 years ago, the second best time to act is now. Let us hope the council acts soon."
