A proposal from Maidstone’s Green Councillor, Stuart Jeffery, to tackle water pollution from sewage spills into the River Medway received full support at a Council meeting last night. The proposal asked Maidstone Borough Council to focus its efforts with Southern Water to ensure that the sewage system is able to cope with demand. Suggestions from other councillors on water supply and concerns about run off from roads were added to the proposal.
Cllr Stuart Jeffery (Green), “I was delighted to propose a motion to tackle water pollution to Maidstone Borough Council last night. The proposal was added to by Cllrs Russell and Harwood with friendly amendments before passing without opposition.
“This motion was about health, the health of people and the health of the rest of the living world. Water is essential for life and clean water is essential for health yet we are in the middle of a biodiversity emergency and we need to do everything in our power to enhance and regenerate the living world.
“We have all read about the paucity of our sewage system, how it no longer copes with the demands placed upon it, yet we are expected to increase those demands each year. We need to work with Southern Water and South East Water to ensure that we have clean rivers and a good water supply.
“We need to have influence over our effluence.”
