A petition to save the Tovil recycling centre started by Green Party campaigner for Coxheath, Claire Kehily, has attracted over 700 signatures in its first two days showing the strength of feeling that the centre must not close. Data show that Maidstone already has a high level of fly tipping and the Greens are concerned that the closure will make this worse.
Claire Kehily, Green Party campaigner for Coxheath said, “The fly tipping around Coxheath is awful and the closure of the recycling centre will simply make it worse.
“Getting to the Allington recycling centre from this side of town involves struggling through one of the most congested areas in the county. People simply won’t make that trip.”
Cllr Stuart Jeffery, Green Party said, “We need to make sure people can recycle household waste easily.
“Closing the Tovil site, or any site, is a real backward step and will lead to more waste crime. I really do wonder if the Conservatives on Kent County Council actually care about fly tipping?”
