No ‘Rivers Task Force’ for Maidstone

Local Greens have expressed disappointment at Maidstone Borough Council’s cabinet for deciding that there is no need for a task force to tackle the problems in our local rivers, particularly pollution and biodiversity. The plan, conceived six months ago, reached its final decision point at the Cabinet meeting in Maidstone last night where it was rejected.

The Rivers Task Force had support from the Greens and the Lib Dems.

Green Councillor Stuart Jeffery said “I am disappointed. Our rivers are in an appalling state and despite claims from the cabinet that there is work going on, they remain badly polluted and in need of help.

“We need leadership and Maidstone Borough Council could provide that; sadly it has chosen not to.

“If there is a change of political control after the local elections in May then we will try again.”

Greens took the plan as a member item request to a Policy Advisory Committee in September where it was agreed to recommend it to the Cabinet.
