The Green Party MP Candidate for Maidstone and the Weald has reacted with shock at the latest increase in the use of foodbanks which are up 32% since last year. He has called for the introduction of a universal basic income for everyone in order to tackle the benefits problems that are driving people to foodbanks.

Stuart Jeffery, Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for Maidstone and the Weald: “I am deeply shocked by the latest data which show a 32% rise in the use of foodbanks since last year. It is clear to me that poverty continues to rise and that we urgently need to tackle it.

“Our benefits system is not fit for purpose, we need a universal basic income that covers the cost of living and which is paid to all. This would eliminate any wait for support. We also need to ensure that people are supported in times of need, not just by charities but by local government.

“Austerity continues to devastate families and communities. Despite being in the so-called affluent south east, poverty is real. Austerity must end.”
